PEMD is applied throughout the Energy, Industrial and Transport sectors. We work across multiple sectors. Our approach will develop both depth and breadth.

We support cross sector collaboration and knowledge transfer.

  • To address the climate emergency, we must accelerate innovation in renewables

  • Economics will play an increasing role in our decision making

  • The aim is to reduce CO2 frm the energy sector 80% by 2050

  • The DER-ICs pools UK's world class expertise to support innovation across PEMD for the energy sector

  • Electrification will reduce the role of fossil fuels in vehicles, HVAC and industrial machinery

DER Industry.png

  • PEMD technologies provide the means to deliver the industrial digital revolution

  • It is central to the realisation and success of Industry 4.0

  • As electric technology grows, more opportunities for its adoption will appear

  • DER-ICs reduce the risk and capital needed for innovation with prototyping and scale up to support adoption of PEMD technologies

DER Robotics.png

  • Innovative technologies are being developed to overcome net zero challenges

  • Businesses rethinking their autonomous manufacturing processes throughout the zero-emission production chain

  • Advancements in AI has a high impact on the reduction of carbon footprints

  • DER-IC have the network infrastructure in place to support companies to develop their developing framework

  • VTOL, UAV’s, electrification of auxiliary systems, etc

  • Emissions and noise from aircraft must reduce by 2040

  • But demand for passenger and cargo air travel is growing

  • We need to adopt more electric and hybrid technology in this sector

  • The DER-ICs are building collaborative partnerships to help to overcome these complex challenges

  • And help to overcome the complex challenges in this market

  • The global trend is already toward greater electrification in the automotive sector

  • In the UK, cars must have 50 miles zero carbon capability by 2030, zero emissions by 2035

  • The expertise we have in the UK can support innovation globally - an export opportunity

  • By supporting companies in the automotive supply chain, we will accelerate the development of new processes

  • The global marine and shipbuilding sector is rapidly expanding in the next 10 years

  • Our DER Industrialisation Centres and Partners are pooling expertise across the end-to-end supply chain

  • Innovation in this sector will:

    • provide significant performance gains

    • reduce operating costs

    • reduce emissions

DER Mico mobiltiy.png

Micro Mobility

  • Electrificiation of passenger cars and light vans alone will not reach Net Zero targets

  • With large projected increases in journeys and final mile deliveries in the coming years, congestion in dense urban areas must also be mitigated

  • Enter “Micromobility” – smaller personal mobility devices, such as eScooters, eCargo bikes and light quadracycles

  • Enabled by electrification technologies to cover impressive ranges, and seeing exponential uptake where regulations allow

  • The UK has all of the industrial strengths to play a key role in this global revolution

  • This is particularly true where operational reliability and availability demands high reliability and robustness

  • Comprises power, sensors and electronics in agricultural and construction equipment

  • Just 3% of the off-highway global powertrain market is hybrid

  • Innovation in this sector will:

    • provide significant performance gains

    • reduce operating costs

    • reduce emissions

  • The DER Industrialisation Centres will help accelerate and enable this work

  • Emissions from rail must reduce to help us meet targets including:

  1. reach net zero emissions by 2050

  2. no new diesels after 2040

  3. sustainable growth of the high speed rail network

DER Truck.png

Truck & Bus

  • Heavy-duty transport faces a huge shift in infrastructure

  • Demand to accelerate deployment of zero-emission trucks and buses to benefit frontline communities

  • Increase in model availability of BEVs

  • New Zero Emissions Buses Regional Area (ZEBRA) scheme worth up to £120 million has been launched in the UK to support local authorities to introduce zero-emission buses

  • DER-IC helps deliver on the UK Govt commitment to introduce 4,000 zero-emission buses to the UK

Power Electronics, Machines & Drives (PEMD) are essential to next generation technologies:

  • No new cars or vans powered wholly by petrol and diesel from 2030

  • New aircraft to be electric / hybrid to meet next phase emissions and noise legislation by 2040

  • Renewables (Wind, Wave, Tidal) to form an increasing percentage of energy generation (80% CO2 reduction by 2050)

  • High speed rail network to grow, no new diesels after 2040

  • Marine transport target 50% CO2 reduction by 2050

  • PEMD supports the realisation of the industrial digital technology (IDT) revolution – Industry 4.0

More than the sum of the parts

Organisations in each sector will provide PEMD insight to the DER-ICs. This could be in the form of market opportunities, market trends or industry requests for support of PEMD manufacturing process, scale up and supply chain development.

The DER-ICs and their network partners will share their PEMD R&D and industrialisation capability and expertise in a DER-IC capability mapping database. This will be used as the basis of signposting PEMD industry opportunities and collaborative project consortium building to help industry to meet their PEMD manufacturing and supply chain challenges.

The DER-IC’s will facilitate cross- sector collaboration and knowledge transfer by encouraging industries to invest and collaborate with academia, Research Technology Organisations and government to get involved in innovative manufacturing process technology development and translation.

“The DER-ICs are critical to Advanced Electric Machine’s plan to scale from 1000s to 100,000s of electric motors per year, helping us to develop manufacturing capability and supply chain links to support our customers around the globe. We are a multi-sectoral manufacturer, so it is important that the Centres have been established to cover the needs of different industries. We believe in the UK as a global centre for electrification; the Centres are key to announcing this capability to the world.”
