Micro Mobility

  • Electrificiation of passenger cars and light vans alone will not reach Net Zero targets
     

  • With large projected increases in journeys and final mile deliveries in the coming years, congestion in dense urban areas must also be mitigated
     

  • Enter “Micromobility” – smaller personal mobility devices, such as eScooters, eCargo bikes and light quadracycles

  • Enabled by electrification technologies to cover impressive ranges, and seeing exponential uptake where regulations allow
     

  • The UK has all of the industrial strengths to play a key role in this global revolution
     

  • This is particularly true where operational reliability and availability demands high reliability and robustness

  • Heavy-duty transport faces a huge shift in infrastructure
     

  • Demand to accelerate deployment of zero-emission trucks and buses to benefit frontline communities
     

  • Increase in model availability of BEVs

  • New Zero Emissions Buses Regional Area (ZEBRA) scheme worth up to £120 million has been launched in the UK to support local authorities to introduce zero-emission buses
     

  • DER-IC helps deliver on the UK Govt commitment to introduce 4,000 zero-emission buses to the UK

Power Electronics, Machines & Drives (PEMD) are essential to next generation technologies:

  • No new cars or vans powered wholly by petrol and diesel from 2030
     

  • New aircraft to be electric / hybrid to meet next phase emissions and noise legislation by 2040

  • Renewables (Wind, Wave, Tidal) to form an increasing percentage of energy generation (80% CO2 reduction by 2050)
     

  • High speed rail network to grow, no new diesels after 2040

  • Marine transport target 50% CO2 reduction by 2050 
     

  • PEMD supports the realisation of the industrial digital technology (IDT) revolution – Industry 4.0

More than the sum of the parts

Organisations in each sector will provide PEMD insight to the DER-ICs. This could be in the form of market opportunities, market trends or industry requests for support of PEMD manufacturing process, scale up and supply chain development. 

 

The DER-ICs and their network partners will share their PEMD R&D and industrialisation capability and expertise in a DER-IC capability mapping database. This will be used as the basis of signposting PEMD industry opportunities and collaborative project consortium building to help industry to meet their PEMD manufacturing and supply chain challenges.

The DER-IC’s will facilitate cross- sector collaboration and knowledge transfer by encouraging industries to invest and collaborate with academia, Research Technology Organisations and government to get involved in innovative manufacturing process technology development and translation.
