Newly appointed Professor of Practice in the School of Engineering, Professor Matt Boyle, will talk about his 35 year career journey from graduation to floating a company on the NASDAQ, to his current position as Chairman of the Driving the Electric Revolution Innovation Centres programme.
After graduating from Glasgow University in 1984, Matt spent his early career in Honeywell and GEC Alsthom. He joined Sevcon Inc. in 1996, later floating the company on NASDAQ and becoming President and CEO in 1997, a position he held until the company was sold to BorgWarner in 2017 for $200m. Through his long international career in industrial Power Electronics, Machines and Drives (PEMD), Matt has built up an extensive network of high level contacts in the sector. He is also well connected at governmental levels. Matt is currently Chairman of the Driving the Electric Revolution Innovation Centres programme, an Innovate UK initiative being led by Newcastle University to establish a PEMD innovation and supply chain in the UK. He was awarded an OBE in the 2018 New Years’ Honours list for services to Engineering and Skills.
